Hello Hello!

Hello!

So much happening in our math classes these days! Here is a quick summary of the concepts that we have covered and what we have coming up in both grades!

5th
We just finished unit 5 which was all about fractions again! Students learned how to use equivalent fractions to find common denominators. Then they applied what they learned about common denominators to adding and subtracting mixed numbers. They learned how to solve more complex fraction of problems and then made the connection that fraction of problems are really just multiplication! We then moved into the first steps of learning how to divide fractions. Students divided a whole  number by a fraction and then a fraction by a whole number. Thursday and Friday all 5th grade students took their unit test and will have those back on Monday to bring home!
Our new unit is on investigations in measurement; decimals multiplication and division.

6th
We started a unit on geometry! My favorite! We did some basic review of polygons and then moved into how to find the area of a triangle and a parallelogram. Students learned what a net is and then were asked to build a house! In groups of three/four students were given the challenge to build a paper house using only three sheets of graph paper and their houses must be made from successful nets. It's been so much fun to see students work together to create fun nets/buildings. I will post pictures when they are finished!

Students have also been exposed to a new math program that we are testing out called ST Math. They love  it!
