Fall update!

Hello Everyone!

We have been busy busy busy in math class this Fall! It's hard to believe that we are already more than half way through the first trimester. Progress reports have been sent home and some are being returned signed. All students should return their progress reports to their home room teachers. We just wanted to make sure that you are having a conversation with how your student is doing in each of their classes!

If you have any questions about how your student is doing in math please feel free to contact me through email. My email address is Rweber@rivendellschool.org

Here is an update on what we are learning in 5th and 6th grade!

5th Grade:

Students in 5th grade just finished their first unit of the year. This unit started by reviewing area concepts but was mainly about volume. They took their first unit test and will have their grade by early next week. When students take a test they bring home their test with their grade to have a parent sign it to see how they did. They also have to make corrections to the problems that they got incorrect as a homework assignment.
Our next unit is on Whole number place value and operations. In this unit we will cover operations with exponents, powers of 10, mental division, and I will teach students how to multiply using the U.S. Traditional method which is how many of you know how to multiply! Please do not try to teach this to your student before I do.

6th Grade:
Students in 6th grade have been learning all about graphs and data landmarks like the mean, median, mode, range, maximum and minimum. They have created line plots, bar graphs, and histograms. For the rest of this unit students will review integers (different types of positive and negative numbers), finding fractions between fractions, and plotting points on a coordinate grid.

Looks like it's going to be another strangely warm weekend! I hope you can make some time to be outside with your kids!
