Hello!

Welcome to my Blog!

This is where you will find updates on what students are learning and what activities they are doing specifically in math class! I do my best to take pictures each week so you can usually find pictures at the end of each blog post.

The first couple of weeks in math have been busy and fabulous! We have started the year off with activities and videos from the program YouCubed. This program focuses on how students think about math. Each day we watch a quick clip that focuses on one big idea then the students discuss any connections that they have with the video. The big ideas that students took away from the videos are:
"Speed is not important"
"Believe in yourself"
"Mistakes make our brain grow"
"Everyone can be good at math"

Some students come to 5th grade thinking that they aren't good at math and don't like math. It's my job to show them that anyone can be good at math, math is fun, and we need math for everything we do!
After we discuss the big ideas students are then given problem solving activities that they either have to work with a partner on or with a small group.

Next Week:

5th Grade- In 5th grade we will start discussing area and volume. We will do several hands on activities that will help students visualize these concepts

6th Grade- In 6th grade we will start discussing data, how to collect data, then how to use data to create and analyze graphs!
